Thomas Parmelius Van Voorhis was the first of nine larger-than-life Cradle of Coaches sculptures to be installed at Miami University of Oxford, Ohio and was unveiled in October 2009. Van Voorhis was the pioneer of Collegiate Intramural Athletics in America and developed his coaching philosophy while employed by the University. That philosophy forever changed the face of the American campus. Grandson Dan VanVoorhis of Chicago, Illinois sponsored “The Cradle of Coaches” sculpture collection which is comprised of the Van Voorhis rendering plus eight additional coach figures including Ara Parseghian, John Pont, Bo Schembechler, Carm Cozza, Paul Brown, Paul Dietzel, Red Blaik and Weeb Ewbank. Each coach represented studied at MU, won the title “Coach of the Year” at least one time and was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame, among other requirements. Tom Van Voorhis played coach to many of these legendary figures and stands alone at the entrance to Yager Stadium.
